LT 5.4 Pace and contrast

«Compare the design (in terms of pace and contrast) of an online magazine, blog or website to that of a printed magazine, book or journal.

  • What differences can you see between the kinds of design strategies used in the two formats?
  • Write down your findings and upload it to WordPress.»

I chose to compere Costume magazine with their own website because I wanted to see the differences in the two types of media, but with the same content. Costume is a lifestyle magazine that mainly writes about fashion, beauty, interior, culture etc. First I checked out the physical magazine and at first glance it looks a bit messy in term of grids. It looks like the designer/ art director chose a more artistic type of setup, rather that strictly following grids and columns. The pages mostly consist of pictures and collages and only a few articles. It also contains a lot of ads.

I feel like the website is a bit easier to navigate. The main site consist of four columns with pictures and headings that lead you to different articles. The articles usually consist of one column. The website of course have a lot of ads as well but I feel like its not as annoying because its more hidden, where as in the physical magazine you would just turn pages and pages in a row consisting of ads to get to their actual content.

Overall they keep the same look in terms of design but I would prefer the website because it has more articles and its free. I feel like I paid way too much for the magazine when 30% or more are ads.
